Thirty five Cambridgeshire Army Cadets and
fourteen adult instructors went the extra mile for cancer relief
on Sunday 4th May, marshalling the seventeen mile
route of the MacMillan cancer relief riverside walk from
Cambridge
to Ely for the sixth year in a row.
The event was one of 25 walks taking place around
the country and has the distinction of being the longest. It was
officially opened by Cambridge City Mayor Jenny Bailey in the
presence of Mayoress Jennifer Liddle at the first start point at
Jesus Green, Cambridge.
The aim was to raise vital funds to help local people in their
battle against cancer, with a target figure this year of
£37,000.

The fine weather encouraged over 375 registered
walkers to take on the route to Kings Playing fields, Ely, and
this year Cambridgeshire ACF entered a team of four walkers
headed by Potential Instructor Wil Hornett. The all male team
included Corporal Sam Norman (16), L/Corporal Ryan Hornett (16)
and also Cadet Dan Taylor (15) who came from Humberside & South
Yorkshire ACF to take part. The lads raised a creditable £200 in
sponsorship for the event.
Live broadcast team Charlotte and Lauren from Star
107 radio were on hand to liven up the action and refreshments
provided by MacMillan volunteers half way at Waterbeach Marina
encouraged the walkers during the day.
MacMillan Fund Raising Manager Elspeth Potter
said, “We could not even attempt this walk without the
assistance of the Army Cadet Force. We are always grateful for
their assistance and the contribution they make to a great day
for everyone to enjoy”.
