Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

Map And Compass

Map & Compass

You do it every day……. finding your way around. You can ask people for directions, look at signposts or get shown by someone.  -  But what about when you are in the middle of the countryside with no people or signposts around ?

This is where map and compass skills come in very handy. Once learned you will use these skills in every day life especially as you start to drive and in some situations these skills can also be a life saver.

You will learn how to fold and take care of a map, to how to read it properly and what the symbols mean – and it doesn’t end there! You will be also introduced to the compass - what it is, how it works and how to use it.

Using map and compass together, you will then learn how to measure distances, take bearings and complete route cards. We will even teach you how to use the stars to guide you.

Learning these skills can open a new world to you. You could take up orienteering, use it in conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, plan expeditions or use it as part of our adventure training packages.
