Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

Skill At Arms

Skill At Arms

All handling and use of weapons or ammunition in the Army Cadet Force is directly supervised by adult instructors who have received in-depth training from the regular army.

We use a variety of weapons during the military aspects of our training and also in learning the art of target shooting. This includes rifle drill, shooting on rifle ranges, shooting clays and the practical use and care of rifles whilst on fieldcraft exercises.

Before you are allowed to handle or use any weapon you will first be taught safety rules which are vital for your personal safety and the safety of others. There is a weapon handling safety test to be passed to prove you know what you are doing.

So which types of weapons would you use?

You will start training target shooting with air rifles. These are ideal to start with as they are light, quiet and easy to use.

Air Rifle

Next you will move on to the No. 8 rifle. This is heavier and slightly more complex that the air rifle as it has a bolt action. Again, this rifle is only used for target shooting but is more challenging than the air rifle.

No.8 Rifle

After the No. 8 rifle you will be trained on the L98A2 5.56mm Cadet General Purpose (GP) Rifle. This is used for live target shooting on full bore ranges. Once you have proven you are competent and safe you will also be allowed to fire blank ammunition with this rifle during out door training exercises.

L98A2 Cadet GP Rifle

Our final weapon is the Light Support Weapon (LSW). This ‘semi-automatic’ weapon is based on the cadet GP rifle and is used by senior cadets on target ranges and sometimes during outdoor training exercises.

LSW

We also offer the chance to take part in clay shooting at various times during the year and for this type of shooting standard shot guns are used.

For each type of weapon you will be taught:

Safety

Cleaning and maintenance

Weapon characteristics

Correct handling

‘Sighting of the weapon’

Judging distances

Breathing techniques

Fire control orders

How to deal with stoppages

Ammunition safety procedures

If you find yourself developing a keen interest in shooting there are many shooting weekends held throughout the year which you can attend to practice your skills. (See the events calendar for dates). You can find out more information from your detachment commander or the County shooting officer. If you are good at shooting you may even make it on to one of our top teams and represent the County or ACF nationally or even internationally!
