Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience?

No, you will receive training in all aspects of ACF duties. Your existing skills will be welcomed as a compliment to your ACF training.

Do I get paid?

You will be eligible to receive payment for a set number of days each year whilst involved in official ACF activities. Payment is not substantial though and should not be your reason for wishing to join.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

Yes. A uniform very similar to that worn by the regular army will be issued to you free of charge.  It is your responsibility to keep it in a good state of repair and to return it once your ACF service ends.

How much time do I have to devote to the ACF?

Usually, either one or two parade evenings per week at your local detachment and occasional weekends. In addition to this, it is up to you how much time you want to give. Help is always welcomed on company and annual camps for example, and the other many activities we offer.

What does annual camp entail?

The two-week camp is the highlight of the cadet training year and runs during school summer holidays. It normally takes place in the UK at one of the many Army training camps – this could be anywhere from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands. Activities include a whole range of outdoor pursuits and adventure training as well as application of the basic military skills learned by the cadets throughout the year.

What activities will I be involved in?

This is up to you!  If you have gained the right qualifications you can take part in or even lead activities including abseiling, trekking, first aid, sports, camping, music, competitive shooting, drill, fieldcraft and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Can I get time off work to go to camp?

You must discuss this with your employer as it is their discretion whether you are given leave or take the time off out of your annual holiday entitlement.

Is the ACF part of the Regular or Territorial Army?

No, this is a common misconception. The ACF is a youth organisation which wears a similar uniform and operates under a similar rank structure to the Army. There is no military liability involved and adult instructors cannot be called up for military service unless they have chosen to serve with the TA also.

What Courses can I do?

There is a huge range of courses and qualifications on offer – mostly fee of charge – and most of which are recognised outside the ACF.

If I have previous military service do I still have to do the ACF training courses?

Yes, all adults complete the induction and adult instructor’s course regardless of previous military experience. This is because dealing with young people requires more than a reliance on military skills which were previously learned in an adult environment. Many of our policies and practical procedures differ from the armed services and the courses will also enable you to understand and comply with current legislation relating to children and young people in particular.

Can I still be an Instructor if I’ve committed a minor offence?

Each application to join is viewed individually, but generally speaking minor offences and petty crimes won’t necessarily debar you.

Do you run checks on Adult Instructor applicants?

Definitely.   Criminal Records Bureau and security checks are vital in ensuring the safety of our cadets and the protection of national security.
