Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark
Music In The Hills

Twenty Seven army cadets and six adult instructors from Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force Corps of Drums were at Brecon in the hills of Wales from 19th to 22nd February to take part in a very prestigious concert.

The weekend marked the 130th anniversary of the famous action at Rorkes Drift during the Zulu wars in which 150 soldiers gallantly defended a remote supply station against over 4,000 native warriors in 1879, winning eleven Victoria Crosses and several other awards for outstanding bravery.

The concert is staged each year by Cadet Force Music, and this year - as a special treat for the people of Brecon - the new colours of the famous 24th Regiment of Foot were paraded through the town with our young musicians at the head of the procession led by Drum Major Cadet L/Cpl Jamie Martin from Cambridge Detachment who was to celebrate his 16th birthday the very next day!

It was certainly a busy weekend. A full day of rehearsals and kit preparation preceded the 12th Rorkes Drift concert to take place in the Theatre Brycheiniog in Brecon, and on the evening following the parade many local dignitaries, towns people and senior officers from the Regular Army, TA and Army Cadet Force experienced an unequalled extravaganza of music and dance from the Bands of nine cadet force formations from around the UK.

Speaking after the event, Officer Commanding the Corps of Drums, Captain Lynn Herriot said, “The display of drumming which our cadets put on was extremely well received by the audience and they left the stage to several calls of ‘encore!’.” “This is what the cadet movement is really about – young people taking part in the community and learning lifelong skills”.
