Army Cadets from Cambridge and Ely took central stage with Sea Cadets from Huntingdon at a prestigious annual awards event held at St Ivo School, St Ives near Cambridge on Thursday 12th March 2009.

Rewarded Cadets

Hosted and managed by the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, this year’s High Sheriff’s Award Scheme event took place before many distinguished guests and local dignitaries and saw twenty youth groups, including the three cadet teams, receive generous monetary donations rewarding their commitment to community activities and youth development.

Following an exciting drama performance by the St Ives Youth Theatre, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Judy Pearson, personally presented cheques to each group and amongst the first to receive recognition were members of the Huntingdon & District Sea Cadet Corps led by Petty Officer Andy Ford. The group parades twice per week at RAF Wyton to support young people in personal development and learning new skills. Their grant goes towards covering the costs of unit expeditions, cadet training courses and administration of their unit.

Following up closely were members of Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force Corps of Drums led by Captain Lynn Herriot, County Director of Music John Shaw and Sergeant Instructor Tim Clarke. Looking resplendent in their scarlet uniforms Cadet Corporal Duncan Elliott, (16) from Chesterton and Cadet L/Corporal Jamie Martin (16) from Cambridge, received certificates and a cheque for £500 which will be used towards the provision and restoration of musical instruments so their 50 strong band can continue to play at public events throughout the county. “This money will make a huge difference to us”, said Captain Herriot. “It means we can repair and update equipment so the Corps remains one of the best cadet musical formations in the country”

Maintaining the momentum, army cadets from Ely were also on parade led by Staff Sergeant Instructor Kay Storey. Receiving certificates and their award of £200 towards the provision of camping and outdoor pursuits equipment, Cadet Sergeant Major Jeremy Latham (18), Cadet Corporal Jodi Page (16) and Cadet L/Corporal Pawl Kolasa (15), proudly marched on to loud applause. “ We are always involved in adventure training of all descriptions,”, said SSI Storey, “The generosity of the High Sheriff will be put to good in use, particularly in preparing for our annual camp this July”

Able Cadet Rebecca Rayner (15) who has been a Huntingdon Sea Cadet for nearly five years, received a personal certificate for outstanding work in her local community, and fundraising for several worthy causes.
