Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

Seven Times Lucky For Local Cadets

Fifty Cambridgeshire army cadets and twelve of their adult instructors went the extra mile for cancer relief on Sunday 3rd May, marshalling the seventeen mile route of the MacMillan cancer relief riverside walk from Cambridge to Ely for the seventh year in a row.

The event was one of 25 walks taking place around the country and has the distinction of being the longest. It was officially opened by Cambridge City Mayor Councillor Mike Dixon in the presence of Lady Olwen Cass, County Chair for MacMillan at Jesus Green Cambridge. The aim was to raise vital funds to help local people in their battle against cancer, with a target figure this year of £45,000.

The fine weather encouraged over 500 registered walkers to take on the route to Kings Playing fields, Ely, and this year Star 107 radio promotions team Annick and  Bekki were on hand to liven up the action. Refreshments provided by MacMillan volunteers half way at Waterbeach Marina encouraged the walkers - and at the finish line in Ely hot soup and drinks were laid on by Cambridge University Officer Training Corps.

MacMillan fund raising manager Michelle Pullen said, “We could not even attempt this walk without the assistance of the army cadets. The always get a great response from the walkers and we are always grateful for their assistance”.
