Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

'Major' Change For Peterborough And Fenland Army Cadets

Army cadets throughout the Peterborough and Fenland areas will have a change of commander from Monday 11th May 2009.

New Cadet Commander Major Ken Howard

After three years in the ‘hot seat’, Major Tom Denton is taking up a staff role at Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force headquarters with special responsibility for the training of the county’s adult instructors – and arriving to take command is Major Ken Howard.

Ken, (61), a retired fire officer from Bedford, was formerly the County Training Officer with Bedfordshire Army Cadet Force, prior to their amalgamation with Hertfordshire in April 2008. He originally joined the ACF in 1960 and has held many appointments including detachment commanderships and Regimental Sergeant Major Instructor as he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a commissioned officer in 1995. He is the holder of the cadet forces medal with three bars and is married to Linda. He has a son Robert, daughter Sarah, three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Speaking of his appointment Major Howard said, “It is a privilege to be the commanding officer of one of only three companies which make up Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force.” “I will be building on the work of Major Denton in raising the profile and benefits of cadet service amongst the young people of Peterborough and Fenland”.

Number 1 Company, which Major Howard now commands, covers an area which includes eight active cadet detachments  in Peterborough, March, Whittlesey and Wisbech.

The Army Cadet Force is a national voluntary youth organisation sponsored by, but not part of, the Army. It has 45,000 members aged 12-18 and 8,500 volunteer adults in its 1,760 detachments around the UK. Army Cadets learn independence, responsibility and leadership through activities such as sport, adventurous training, music, first aid and military skills training; as well as taking part in community activities. Each year, the ACF takes over 20,000 young people to annual summer camps across the country and abroad.
