Lifesaver!

A young Army Cadet Sergeant from Ely has been hailed a lifesaver after resuscitating a pensioner who collapsed outside Cambridge Railway Station on Tuesday 30th June 2009.

Lifesaving Cadet - Jodi Page.

Jodi Page (16) a former student at Ely College, was travelling to sixth form college in Cambridge that morning with her friends when tragedy struck. The 78 year old man collapsed and stopped breathing on the station taxi rank, and whilst onlookers called the emergency services Jodi calmly put into practice the first aid skills she had learned during four years of army cadet training.

“Everyone was really shocked”, said Jodi, “But I knew I could help. I checked to see if he was breathing and began CPR with a resuscitation shield I keep in my purse.”

The young heroine managed to restart the man’s breathing and using a first aid kit supplied by railway staff she also dressed a wound to his neck before paramedics arrived on the scene. Ambulance staff confirmed that the man regained consciousness in the ambulance on the way to Addenbrookes hospital and as a result of Jodi’s actions he has survived his terrifying ordeal.

This is the second time that Jodi, from Chettisham, has put her first aid skills to good use. As a keen member of the county army cadet first aid team travelling home from a competition she climbed into the wreckage of a car crash in 2007 to help a woman following a road accident.

“We are very proud of Jodi’s actions” said County First Aid Adviser Sergeant Major Les Edwards. “We train these young people in life skills and this is absolute proof of their value”.
