Sawston Cadets Make The Running

Local army cadets were among eighteen Sawston charities and organisations which have just benefited from sharing a £17,120 handout by the District Rotary Club.

The amount was raised during the 2009 Sawston Fun Run held in the village on 10th May which attracted 1,031 runners from all over the country. Sawston army cadets regularly provide a drinks stand for the runners as they negotiate the course.

Sawston Rotary Club has developed the event into one of the largest community led events in the region, regularly attracting over 1,000 entrants and has raised in excess of £130,000 since it became responsible for it in 2001. The cumulative amount donated over twenty-four years exclusively to local charities and organisations is now over £319,000.

As a result of the cadets’ efforts Sergeant John Kell and Cadet Jasmine Tompkins attended a prestigious presentation evening held at Sawston Village College on 8th July to receive a whopping cheque for £440 in front of a community crowd of 120 people. The money will go towards navigation and field equipment for the detachment.

Speaking of the generous donation detachment commander Lieutenant Liz Hyslop said, “Every year we support the Sawston Rotary Club by manning one of the water stations at the fun run and this is the second time in six years that we've been selected to receive an award. We are delighted to be able to take part in this valuable community event.”
