Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

Cadet Commandant Walks For Charity

Colonel Roger Herriot (58), Commandant of Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force, took part in the MacMillan Walk on the 2nd May. Despite the awful weather and a clash with the Bank holiday weekend he joined over 350 other walkers to complete the trek from Cambridge to Ely, a distance of 19 miles.

Col. Herriot’s aim for the walk was to promote the Army Cadet Force in the Cadet150 year - marking the 150th Anniversary of cadet forces in the UK – and to raise as much money as possible for the MacMillan Cancer Support and ABF the Soldiers’ Charity.

Supported by Cambridge ACF 28 cadets and 13 instructors organised the marshalling along the route ensuring walkers stayed on the designated paths; giving support and encouragement to complete the course.

The walk was officially started by the Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Russ McPherson, at Jesus Green, Cambridge. Walkers made their way through Fen Ditton alongside the river cam to Waterbeach where they received a welcoming hot drink provided by the Cadets. It was then onward through Bottisham Lock towards Upware, over the Stretham road for the final leg towards the Cathedral on the skyline at Ely.

Walkers where greeted at the finish line with a cheer, hot cup of soup and bread.  The sun finally emerged ending the event with a warm glow and merriment in the knowledge a huge amount of money had been raised for such a good cause.

MacMillan couldn't provide the vital services without organisations like the ACF who support them ensuring as much money as possible is raised to fund the Macmillan nurses who offer a crucial service to people living with cancer.

Baxterbear Hitches ride with the Commandant

In recognition of the Cadet150 celebrations Baxterbear, also a supporter of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, hitched a ride on the Commandants rucksack; both completing the course. After the walk Col. Herriot said “It was hard going especially the final leg which was completely against the chilly Northern wind. Despite the weather it was a great day and I am really pleased I took part in such a worthwhile event”.

Having had his moustache since he was 18 years old Col. Herriot has pledged that the person who sponsors him the most money will be able to publicly shave it off!
