The 6th of June
saw the biggest parade of the year for the Cambridgeshire Army
Cadet Force. The Cadet150 Ely Parade was part of the national
celebrations of 150 years of Cadet Forces in the UK. Each year
the Cadets Support the Cambridgeshire Regimental Council at
their memorial service at Ely Cathedral. This year they invited
the cadets to take part in a much larger parade for their
celebratory year. The Army cadets were supported by the Sea
Cadets, Combined Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps. The
service held in the Cathedral was written by the senior padre of
Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force, The Reverend Alan Jesson TD.
The Salute was taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire,
Hugh Duberly CBE and Major General John Sutherell (Retd) CB,
CBE. On the green there were stands from all the participants of
the parade to show what the cadet forces can offer young people
in the County.

9 Cadets and 5 Instructors manned the
recruiting trailer for the two days of ACE this year. Held on
the 28th & 29th April the weather was kind and they just missed
the only rain shower as they drove away from the site. The Army
kindly helped with the Cadet150 theme this year. There was a
massive Cadet150 flag parachuted into the main arena -- the flag
was produced by HoF Display Solutions at their headquarters in
Kimbolton - by the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Parachute
Display Team "The Tigers". The Royal Artillery "Flying Gunners"
Motorcycle Display Team used the small Army Cadet vans to jump
over in their display. Beds & Herts Corps of Drums showed their
musical skills with three excellent displays. This year the
infantry displays were in the capable hands of the Mercian
Regiment. As ever the cadets had time to find out more about
what the Army has to offer and of course there were always photo
opportunities!

27 Cadets and 9 Instructors from Cambridgeshire and Suffolk ACF
took part in the week long course which started on Easter
Sunday. Following on from the Radio Users Course this is more
in-depth and demanding. Voice procedure, line equipment
(telephone and exchanges), battle code (BATCO), putting up masts
and antenna and some basic electrical theory are all part of the
course. There is a good mix of classroom and practical work and
although this is a challenging course all the cadets thoroughly
enjoyed it. The week finished with a mast competition with 4
teams battling it out to put up a mast in the fastest time while
ensuing safety procedures are adhered to. On the final parade
prizes were presented, the best cadet cup went to Cdt Lauren
Stevenson of Talavera Detachment. The cadets were also presented
with their certificate and X Flag badges, all presentations were
made by Lt. Colonel Jackie Allen, TD the Deputy Chief Executive
of East Anglia RFCA

Crossing the waters to Belgium and the
senior cadets went on the battlefield tours. They visited Tyne
Cote, Hill 62, Ulster Tower and the famous Schwaben Redoubt.
During one of the engagements that were
part of the costly Somme offensive, the Cambridgeshire Regiment
assaulted and successfully captured the Schwaben Redoubt. The
Redoubt was of great strategic importance and had been fought
over many times with great loss of life. The success was so
phenomenal that General Haig recounted the attack as being “one
of the finest feats or arms in the history of the British Army”.
For their personal skill and bravery, 41 awards for gallantry
were bestowed on the Regiment.

This year’s annual
camp started on the 25th July at Napier Barracks, Folkestone in
Kent. Our county training officer Major Cox put together a
fantastic training package. The package included use of the best
ranges in the country and excellent field and in camp training.
Lt Col Knight MBE arranged a trip to Belgium for the senior
cadets which included battlefield tours and taking part in the
prestigious Menin Gate Parade. For cadets who wished to extend
their camp they headed off to picturesque Bavaria. Activities
included a challenging expedition and adventurous training in
the form of kayaking and climbing. Our thanks goes to Captain
Maxwell for all his hard work in arranging passports and to all
the instructors for their organisation and hard work which made
it another fun, challenging and successful camp.
This is part 1 of
5 videos which covers the camp, camp activities and an extensive
range weapons being used on the sea front ranges.
